Great Expanse

The Great Expanse is stretched as far as the eye could see. The bright sun bakes the ground by day, and the moon chills it by night. It's dry, barren, and vast. The harsh sunlight beats down on the sandy floor, cracked lands, and crumbling sandstones. The endless, flat horizon of the Great Expanse is often broken up by large gears that look like they almost touch the sky.

Some people explore the Great Expanse thinking they'll find some great epiphany or something fatefully good will come to them when they're lost… Or sometimes they just get lost to forever wander.

Overview

History

The Great Expanse is mysterious in how it came to be. Most of the time flunctuations and storms are said to be a natural phenomena that occur in the Expanse. Some others say strong mages or beasts came by and in the onslaught of great battles shattered the balance between the mortal plane and ethereal realm of time, cracking it and allowing it to seep through causing the strange time phenomena. It's also said that temporal storms have gotten so terrible that large gears burst out of the ground and planted themselves on the mortal realm to always be seen in the horizon.

The most popular theory are the gargantuan to small beasts that were the only inhabitants in the Great Expanse, backed up by large caverns that are littered across the land that descend into winding dungeons that adventurers love to plunder and explore along with researchers who try to study and figure out the hidden histories. Large claw marks can also be seen about anywhere, some large enough to make ravines. The Great Expanse is a very sought out place between both adventurers, researchers, and historians, though the biggest hurdle are the dangers is the finicky time stability.

It is said, the secret monarch of Kairos, the Aeon somehow harnessed the power of the temporal stability to establish Kairos and the invention of Timepieces. However, no one has really met him, so it's hard to say how true this is, or if he's even alive. People assume the Eon is alive considering how well the city runs and certainly a person that supposedly has control over time lives forever, so people think.

Temporal Storms

A weather phenomena, anyone caught within it will glitch and stutter as their body becomes desynced with the mortal world. If anyone exposes themselves too long to a temporal storm, their temporal stability reaches to a low point where they get dragged into their own ethereal-like realm of Time, where they may be lost forever to wander or to perish by the strange monsters that roam within the realm. During these storms Time Beasts do breach and onslaught anything close to them, whether it be people, animals, or settlements.

Kairos

Near a large, crystal clear body of water lies the capital city of Kairos. This metropolis-like city with buildings as tall as skyscrapers, it can be seen from the horizon making Kairos a very important landmark to travel; if you get lost you at least know one direction you can walk. Kairos has some exceptional technology; within the last decade with the help of some natives from Rheims it has only expanded and improved. Kairos impliments many skybridges and pulley-system elevator platforms to make traversing the city easier on multiple levels. The most iconic creation Kairos has made are their airships, they range to be as big as a typical galley to as small as a rowboat.

Factions

Time Thieves

A gang of thieves that roam the entirety of the Expanse. They often ride on mechanical mounts, vehicles, or even some have their own airships. They roam, and attack people that happen to be crossing the Expanse, whether it be innocent people or loaded noblemen. They particularly target Timepieces that people wear, and either use the Timepieces for themselves, or sell them in Black Markets or to people that want to smuggle themselves into Kairos. Time Thieves are very hardy as they often augment themselves to be 25-75% machine, which often makes them more resistant to the temporal storms.

Temporal Church

Religious organization that shepherds people that find themselves wandering, preaching that they will save people from being lost forever and they can be the world changing epithany and fate that people originally search for in the Expanse. They all wear the same garb, and noted by one iconic feature: gears and machine forcibly jammed and inserted into their heads that slowly turn and exert steam. The Temporal Church seeks to give everyone and all a purpose; by removing self-determination to be just like the gears in their head that always rotate with a meaning because they keep machines (and therefore the city) running correctly.

Golden Hour

Funded by the Aeon himself, Golden Hour is a company that trains Galahads: exceptional and extraordinary people who protect and serve the people of Kairos. Galahads range from exceptional spellcasters or weapon masters, some adventurers from around the word sometimes go to Kairos to even try their hand to be one. However, it often proves difficult to become one, especially for outsiders since they often look at a person's merit and how well they're received by the citizens around them. Good press is very important.
